Chronic Conditions Closed Claims between 2016 and 2020

Chronic conditions are the leading causes of death and disability and are the leading drivers of annual healthcare costs in the United States.

The CDC reports that six in 10 adults have a chronic disease and four in 10 adults have two or more. The MPL Association Data Sharing Project identified approximately 23% of claims closed between 2016 and 2020 with a chronic condition (heart disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease). Heart diseases and cancers were the most common outcomes reported; however, stroke resulted in the highest average indemnity payment ($638,143). Less than 0.3% of closed claims reported Alzheimer's, diabetes, or chronic lung disease as a resulting medical condition.
