Cancer Claims (2016-2020)

The American Cancer Society (ACS) projects 1.9 million new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths to occur in the United States in 2023. Incidence trends are less favorable for women than men, with breast cancer and endometrial cancer on the rise for women, and prostate cancer for men.

The MPL Association Data Sharing Project identified approximately 2,700 claims with cancer patient outcomes closed between 2016 and 2020, with breast cancer topping the list by claim count and total indemnity paid.

Radiologists were named in 25% of closed claims, followed by internists (15%) and family medicine physicians (10%). More than 85% cited diagnostic errors, and 8% cited procedure performance errors.
