ACOG to Receive 2021 MPL Association Award of Excellence
For Risk Management and Patient Safety
(Rockville, MD, May 18, 2021)—The Medical Professional Liability (MPL) Association has announced that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) will receive the 2021 Award of Excellence in Risk Management and Patient Safety. ACOG is being honored for its role as a leading force in the medical community in addressing patient safety. The MPL Association is the leading international organization representing the medical professional liability insurance community.
ACOG is the premier professional membership organization for obstetrician–gynecologists, producing practice guidelines for clinicians and educational materials for patients. The College also provides practice management and career support, facilitates programs and initiatives aimed at improving women’s health, and advocates on behalf of members and patients.
Among its many demonstrations of dedication to patient safety, ACOG has a long-standing commitment to codifying a set of objectives for obstetrician–gynecologists in their practices to provide the safest possible healthcare environment. The College also endorses clinical guidance to establish best practices for creating safer systems of care. As part of this focus, ACOG has implemented policies encouraging obstetrician–gynecologists to enhance communication with patients and medical colleagues, establish a collaborative patient care environment, and disclose errors to improve learning opportunities. In addition, ACOG has established a hands-on, multidisciplinary evaluation of facility approaches to patient safety through its Voluntary Review of Quality of Care (VRQC) program.
“ACOG’s significant efforts to improve all aspects of patient safety in women's healthcare are exceptional,” said Dr. James Q. Swift, chair of the Association Board of Directors and director and chair of OMSNIC. “MPL Association members share this commitment to safe healthcare. We are pleased to honor the dedicated work of ACOG with this award.”
