The MPL Association Elects New Board Members

(Rockville, MD, May 24, 2023)—At its Annual Meeting of Members last week, the Medical Professional Liability (MPL) Association—the international organization representing the MPL insurance community—elected Lisa A. Calder, MD, of the Canadian Medical Protective Association; Andrew F. J. Firth of Medical Insurance Exchange of California; and Edward L. Rand, Jr., of ProAssurance Corporation to serve three-year terms on the Association’s Board of Directors.

Lisa A. Calder, MD is the CEO of the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA). She joined CMPA in 2015 as the Director of Medical Care Analytics where she leveraged medico-legal data to advance safety in medical care. She was appointed CEO of the CMPA in 2020. Calder is an emergency physician who undertook her 5-year residency at the University of Ottawa. She completed an Emergency Medicine research fellowship and obtained her Master of Science degree in Epidemiology in 2007. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa’s Department of Emergency Medicine. She has received the University of Ottawa’s Excellence in Emergency Medicine Quality and Safety Award as well as the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians’ Teacher of the Year Award.

Andrew F. J. Firth is President of the Medical Insurance Exchange of California (MIEC). Firth started his professional career in 1985 as a reinsurance intermediary with R.K. Carvill Co. Ltd. in London, working with syndicates at Lloyds and other international reinsurers. He moved to Chicago in 1990 with the Carvill Group and negotiated and placed reinsurance contracts on behalf of a number of professional liability insurance companies including Lawyers Professional Liability as well as several MPL insurers. In 2005, Firth began working with MIEC and was appointed President at the end of 2008. He graduated from the University of Kent (BA Hons.).

Edward L. Rand, Jr., is the President and Chief Executive Officer of ProAssurance Corporation. Rand, who assumed this position at ProAssurance on July 1, 2019, was formerly Chief Operating Officer, and has served as Chief Financial Officer, Executive Vice President, and Senior Vice President of Finance since joining ProAssurance in November of 2004. Prior to joining ProAssurance, he was Chief Accounting Officer and Head of Corporate Finance for PartnerRe Ltd. from 2000-2004. He also served as the Chief Financial Officer of Atlantic American Corporation from 1996-2000 and Controller of United Capitol Insurance Company from 1992-1996. Prior to that time, Rand was employed by Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) for four years. He is a graduate of Davidson College where he majored in Economics.

Also at the meeting, MPL Association members approved John H. Mize, SVMIC, Sarah E. Scher, Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc., and Gerald V. Zarlengo, MD, COPIC, to additional three-year terms on the Board.

Mize will continue to serve as the Association’s Board chair while Christine Tomkins, the Medical Defence Union, will serve as vice chair, Scher will serve as secretary, and J. Michael Conerly, MD, LAMMICO, will serve as treasurer.
