Spinal Epidural Abscess Claims

Spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is a rare but important infection of the central nervous system.

It can be difficult to diagnose and when left untreated, can cause significant morbidity and mortality1. A review of the DSP database identified 203 SEA claims and lawsuits within a 10-year period (2010-2019). More than $14 million was spent to defend these claims, averaging $70,323 per claim. Approximately 29% of these claims paid an average indemnity of $470,264, $27.3 million in total dollars.
