The MPL Association Elects Two New Directors

(Rockville, MD, May 25, 2021)—At its Annual Meeting of Members today, the Medical Professional Liability (MPL) Association—the international organization representing the MPL insurance community—elected Mandy J. Anderson of MIGA, and Michele J. Johns, JD, of Cleveland Clinic to serve three-year terms on the Association’s Board of Directors.

Mandy Anderson is CEO and managing director of Medical Insurance Group Australia (MIGA), a doctor-owned medical mutual insurance company. With an extensive insurance career, Anderson has held senior management positions in insurance broking with Sedgwick Ltd and insurance and risk management consulting with KPMG. She joined MIGA just prior to the medical indemnity crisis of 2000/2001. During her tenure at MIGA, she has guided the company and its clients through difficult and challenging times and to continued growth in Australia both in its client base and reputation.

Michele Johns is executive director of enterprise risk and insurance at the Cleveland Clinic and president of the Cleveland Clinic Health System Indemnity Company. For the 21 years prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Johns worked for Indiana University Health where she held a variety of positions including vice president and chief risk officer and president of Indiana University Health RRG Inc. From 1990 to 1999, Johns practiced privately in the area of litigation, ultimately defending healthcare providers in medical malpractice actions. She holds the Certified Professional Healthcare Risk Manager (CPHRM) designation.

“These leaders bring great expertise and perspective to the Association,” said MPL Association President and CEO Brian K. Atchinson. “We are fortunate to have them join us to continue our important work to serve our members and advance the mission of the organization.”

Also at the meeting, the MPL Association members approved James Q. Swift, DDS, chair of OMS National Insurance Company, RRG, and W. Stancil Starnes, JD, executive chair of ProAssurance, to additional three-year terms on the Board. In addition, the Association elected Sue A.
